During the 2018-2019 school year, college students spent about $1,290 on books and supplies. As higher education and textbooks for students become more expensive, we can expect open educational resources (OER) to continue to see widespread adoption. Educators across the country have expressed a preference for digital learning materials over print content, and their students are increasingly accepting them. These tools can provide instant feedback, increase efficiency and reduce teacher workload, and integrate formative and summative assessments. We can also expect the rise of intelligent systems powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning for continuous, hassle-free testing and guidance based on what students are prepared to learn. This means more personalized text message service student assessments that may be more meaningful and empowering for learners. Case in point: Teachers use an AI-assisted teaching assistant called Happiness Numbers to figure out what math topics students are struggling with so they can provide personalized help. Before the introduction of Happy Numbers, 60% of students achieved an initial benchmark score of 9 out of 48 in mathematics. A year after implementing the AI assistant, nearly all students performed better and improved their scores to 35.
